Gerard Hoffnung was born in 1925. He was educated at Highgate School and Harrow School of Art and became a schoolmaster at Stamford School and then at Harrow. Later he became a freelance cartoonist, contributing to British, American, and Continental publications, and his books of humorous drawings about music quickly became best-sellers. His paintings were the subject of an exhibition during the Festival of Britain and have appeared in exhibitions of the work of British illustrators.

In addition to playing the bass tuba in a London orchestra, he was the creator of the Hoffnung Music Festival, an original brand of symphonic caricature which was internationally appreciated. Gerard Hoffnung’s non-musical interests included travel and collecting old Staffordshire figures.

He was married with two children. He died in 1959.
